The Libramont Agricultural Fair

For four days the fairground of Libramont becomes a town in its own right. More than eight hundred exhibitors set up their stands: machine manufacturers with gleaming tractors, breeders with their finest cattle, sheep and horses, and artisans offering cheese, honey, charcuterie and beer. The smells alone tell the story: fresh hay, warm waffles, the musky air of horse stables.

But the Foire de Libramont is more than a marketplace. It is a meeting point where farmers from all over Belgium and the neighbouring countries come together to share experiences, discover new techniques and maintain old friendships.

The heart of the fair is the livestock judging. The country’s finest animals are brought to Libramont to be assessed by expert juries. Belgian Blue cattle with their impressive muscle mass, Ardennes horses with their powerful build, sheep with woolly fleeces — each animal is the result of generations of careful breeding.

The breeders are proud of their animals and it shows: the cows are polished until they gleam, the horses wear braided manes, and the sheep are as white as fresh snow. It is a tradition reaching back to the first livestock shows of the nineteenth century, when farmers brought their best animals to market to demonstrate their farm’s worth.

The evenings at the Foire de Libramont are a celebration. Music spills from the tents, children run between the stands, and families sit together at long tables with a plate of Ardennes ham and a glass of local beer. It is the moment when the countryside celebrates itself — not as a backwater, but as the backbone of a country that owes its food, its landscape and its traditions to the people who work the soil.

The Foire de Libramont is more than a fair. It is an annual declaration of love for the countryside — and a reminder that in a world of cities and screens, the earth beneath our feet still matters.
