The Ghost of Grevensmolen

A boy lived at the Grevensmolen in Sint-Truiden. When he lay in bed at night, he often heard someone walking from one room to another. The footsteps sounded heavy and slow, as if someone were deliberately wandering through the house.

One night the door of his room opened and an old woman entered. After that night the boy was so frightened that he no longer dared sleep alone. When he told his grandfather what had happened, the old man nodded: « Have you seen her too?»

The grandfather told the story. The farm had once been owned by a woman who had only a daughter. On her deathbed she gave the farm to her son-in-law on one condition: he had to have a mass read for her on fair day every year. After the French invaded the farm, the son-in-law never had another mass said. The woman still appeared as a ghost to demand the promised masses.
